Guest Post: Christine Hurley Deriso

Today's awesome guest is Christine Hurley Deriso, author of the emotional and fantastic book ...And Then I Met My Sister. The book centers around a teenage girl who's always lived in the shadow of her perfect, but dead, older sister who then starts learning about a whole different side of Shannon, full of secrets and pain, and today, Christine is going to let us delve into her past to talk about some of her favorite books!

What were your favorite books at 5, 10, 15 and 20 and why? From the books out now, which ones do you wish you had at each of those ages?

My favorites:

5: Madeline. The nuns terrified me, but I loved symmetry of those two straight lines.
10: And Then There Were None. Who knew murder could be so fun?
15: The Women's Room. Fiction as social commentary ... cool!
20: Portnoy's Complaint. So scandalous, yet so funny.

Wish I'd had:

5: The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. Who cares if there are stars upon thars?
10: Do-Over. Yes, I wrote it, but I wish I'd known then that your mistakes make you stronger.
15: The Liar's Club by Mary Karr,as if I needed even more incentive to appreciate my wonderful child.
20: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach, which would have meant I was in premed, which would have meant I'd be making more money today than I am. (Just kidding.) (Kinda.)

Thank you, Christine!

So what are your favorites from the past, or ones you wish you had back then?

  1. The Women's Room at 15 - wow! I wouldn't have gotten it when I was a teen, I didn't pick it up until I was in my 20's.
